“The Presumption of Innocence: Modern Trends and Contemporary Challenges”

We can gladly inform that this year the annual ECLAN Conference themed “The Presumption of Innocence: Modern Trends and Contemporary Challenges“ is going to take place in Riga on 15th and 16th May 2025. The conference will be hosted at the University of Latvia (Raiņa bulvāris 19, Rīga), gathering the leading experts, academics, and practitioners in the field.

 

The conference will address the following subjects:

  •  Historical origins, rationale, and recent developments surrounding the presumption of innocence
  • The legal framework of the presumption of innocence within EU law
  • Scope and limitations of the presumption of innocence
  • Allocation of the burden of proof and standard of proof in the context of the presumption of innocence
  • Challenges related to the presumption of innocence in the prosecution of legal persons
  • Premature statements by public officials about the guilt of a defendant in the context of the presumption of innocence
  • Confiscation of criminal assets in the light of the presumption of innocence
  • Upholding the presumption of innocence in simplified forms of criminal procedure
